USGS Kentucky District Schedule
Kick-off of the Louisville/Clarksville Signature Event
Tuesday October 14, 2003
The Opening Ceremony of the Lewis and Clark
Signature Event will begin at 12 pm on the Great Lawn located in downtown
Louisville, Kentucky. Invitations to the event were extended to the Mayor of
Louisville, the Town Councilman of Clarksville, members of Congress, and
agency representatives of the US Geological Survey, National Park Service, Army Corps of Engineers,
Bureau of Land Management, and other Federal agencies.
US Geological Survey representatives will include, Mark Ayers - Kentucky District Chief, Dale Blevins - USGS Lewis and Clark Coordinator, Jon Campbell - USGS
Lewis and Clark Outreach Coordinator, and USGS Kentucky District staff.
Display tents will be located on the Great Lawn as part of the
Trail of Discovery.
USGS staff will be present during the week long
event providing live demonstrations of various equipment used for stream
gaging and data collection, to answer questions and explanations regarding the
methods/processes used to collect and interpret the data, to provide general
information about the US Geological Survey, and it's purpose regarding the
nation's natural resources and the importance of data collection for
monitoring them.

Live demonstrations by USGS staff collecting real-time data in the Ohio River
using a boat; remote control boat demo depicting the operation and use of
the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) equipment

USGS field truck with boom depicting the current Streamflow meters (AA and
pygmy), a wading rod equipped with an AQUA-CALC headset, and examples of
old versus new surveying equipment used in data collection

Map and photos of Kentucky gaging station locations and examples of discharge
measurements and rating curves

Exhibits inside the USGS tent include a map of the historic Lewis and Clark
expedition route; artifacts from the USGS museum collection; excerpts of
the law establishing the USGS; USGS fact sheets of Lewis and Clark, a
Bicentennial Commemoration map, Geomorphic and Hydrologic Observations of
Lewis and Clark; brochures regarding purchase information of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition Map; photo album of past USGS
employees, volunteers, field sites; current day USGS operations; laptop
computers displaying real-time stream gauging data, simulated real-time
Doppler data, models of sediment flow, the Water Science For Schools web
site, and a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the USGS - who we are and
what we do; USGS Kentucky District publications; photos of USGS employees
performing various types of field and office work; Water Science for
Schools packets; Water Science for kids posters, bookmarks, and mapping
worksheets; a Water Jeopardy game relating to water trivia; hydro-lab
demonstration depicting different constituents in water, (i.e., dissolved
oxygen, salinity, conductivity, etc).
